Instead you will find a charming Mediterranean lifestyle, lined with small, elegant shops and oceanfront homes, featuring breath-taking views of enchanting coves and white sandy beaches. WALKING THROUGH LA JOLLAIf you would like to tour La Jolla on foot, the ideal place to begin is along Coast Boulevard at La Jolla Cove. Because of it clear, calm water, this area is a favorite to residents, vacationers and San Diegans who like to swim, snorkel, sunbathe, or scuba dive. In season, meaning summertime or hotter than normal days, the beaches can become quite busy, but off-season in La Jolla offers a much more quiet environment. Still lifeguards are available on an annual basis.
Ellen Browning Scripps Park is located just south of the cove and is a long stretch of soft grass, with a park atmosphere, making it an ideal place to bring the family, lounge around, have a picnic, gaze at the oceanview and even listen to music, as there are free concerts scheduled on weekends. If you move seaward you will come to Boomer Beach, which is a surfer's paradise. High tide brings the waves "Booming in to Shore", thus naming this stretch of beach. Only more experienced surfers should ride here, because there is a high price to be paid if mistakes are made. Surfers must pull out of the wave before it breaks on the shallow, jagged ocean floor.
Continue going south and you will come to the Seal Rock Marine Mammal Reserve, located at the beginning of Jenner Street. These seals have taken over a beach as their own and it can be quite a site to see 50 to 100 seals sunbathing the day away. Always keep your distance and never feed the animals.
If you are wanting to walk through the dining and shopping district in La Jolla, you can really begin anywhere. But to really get the most out of it, we recommend that you start on Prospect Street. Filled with an incredible array of shops, galleries, restaurants and boutiques, Prospect Street offers everything from fine dining to works by famous artists to the latest trend-setting fashions.
Girard AvenueThis street, or at least the first two blocks, is not to be overlooked if you are searching for great food, or the latest in the world of fashion, art and jewelry.
Bird RockBird Rock is just south of La Jolla and is, considered by many, a small piece of heaven on earth. Dream homes overlooking the Pacific Ocean, well-manicured lawns and majestic palm trees all combine to make this area some of La Jolla's most featured real estate. In addition, the general pace of life is much slower than the Village of La Jolla, which is an attraction in itself. Southern La Jolla's Bird Rock with its glorious residential district and commercial area along La Jolla Boulevard is a must for not only vacationers, but also San Diego residents.
North La JollaOne of the many highlights is North La Jolla. This picturesque community is lined with tall palm trees, elegant oceanview real estate and is of home to the most popular beach in La Jolla. During the summer, vacationers, residents, swimmers, sunbathers and surfers flock to this beautiful beach, for its fun and clean atmosphere. Spreading nearly two miles of white sandy beaches and sloping hills, it offers year-round lifeguard service, public restrooms, showers, swings and jungle gyms for children, surfing year round and beach rentals. Adjacent to the beach is a large parking lot and Kellogg Park, a large grassy area, which has several tables and barbeques, making this an ideal area for a picnic or to spend the afternoon.
Follow the winding road of La Jolla Shores Drive to the top of Torrey Pines and you will come to the University of California at San Diego (UCSD), which is one of the top 10 research universities in the USA. The faculty includes several Nobel laureates.
A journey through La Jolla would not be complete unless you made a stop at the world famous Torrey Pines Golf Course, which is the site of the annual Buick Invitational Golf Tournament held each February. A bit further and you will come to the Torrey Pines State Reserve, which is 1700 acres and overlooks the Pacific Ocean.
